Grade 4 and up | $10 material fee | No previous experience is necessary, since this course will start with the most basic information such as holding the instrument, sitting position, using a pick, etc. Students will very quickly learn how to locate and name all the notes on the fingerboard, and to play major & minor scales. They will develop an understanding of how scales, arpeggios, and chords are related. Sight reading standard music notation in treble clef will be a weekly part of our curriculum. We will explore various song types & styles of music by using American rock & pop songs (both traditional and current hits), and some Chinese songs & melodies as well. Students who complete this course will be able to read music and should be able to entertain in a solo setting and understand the process of playing in a group. |

Grade 1-3 | No previous drumming experience is necessary, since the aim of this course is to introduce very young students to the concepts of rhythms & time keeping. This will enable students to better process abstract concepts. We will have hands-on experience with many different types of hand percussion instruments, and those which are played with sticks/mallets. Students will learn many of the rudimentary strokes & patterns, and will learn to read percussion notation. Each student will come to understand the discipline necessary to master an instrument, and the importance of doing ones’ part in a group. Each will get a considerable amount of time on a full drum set. (This experience has been shown to increase strength, coordination, and endurance.) Students who complete this course will be very well prepared to play percussion in school band when the opportunity arises in Middle/High school Orchestra or Jazz Band. | |

Over a million students play competition Scrabble in more than 20,000 schools and libraries nationwide through the School Scrabble Program. Developed in 1991, the program has earned praise from educators who cite improved vocabulary, spelling, dictionary skills, math, creativity, spatial relationships and cooperative learning among its benefits. Meanwhile, the students are having so much fun they don’t even realize they’re learning! Students play in teams of two when playing in the program, which emphasizes the teamwork and cooperative learning aspect. As in chess, competition Scrabble is played with a clock, with penalties for going over the allotted time. Scrabble is an exciting game that has proved very popular with the young. The first National School Scrabble Championship, for students in grades 4-8, was held in 2003. Winners of this annual competition have gone on to matriculate at top colleges. Please sign up for this Scrabble class in which you will enjoy a mental workout by playing through Scrabble games, play-by-play, learning at every move how a director of the North American Scrabble Players Association would play with her strategy and reasoning! Vocabulary building involves three core components: context, group, and word parts, namely prefix, root and suffix. Composition is centered on persuasive and expository writing. Tips, tricks, strategies, pop quizzes, diagnostic and assessment tests will be given throughout the course. This is a moderately paced class and is not suitable for students who need intensive and comprehensive instructions and/or last minute SAT quick fixes. Student progress will be influenced by factors such as motivation, aptitude, commitment to practice, and learning strategies applied. Students are expected to review and practice outside class. Vocabulary drill, active reading, and frequent writing are recommended for outside study. |
